Empty Rowboat, Quiet Water
--
I’m drawn first to the top-down view of a small wooden rowboat floating alone — the perspective makes it feel intimate, like I’m standing right above it. The artist worked mostly in blues, layering washes so the hull reads as both solid and slightly translucent, with darker strokes carving the ribs and seats. There’s a warm, sandy yellow tucked into the interior that contrasts quietly with the cool tones, suggesting worn wood or a small patch of sunlight. The reflection below is softer, more abstract, a blurred blue echo that follows the boat’s shape but lets the watercolor blooms do the work. You can see the paper’s grain through the paint; the dry-brush texture and subtle bleeding of edges give the scene a calm, imperfect realism. Overall it feels quiet and still — a little lonely but peaceful, like a pause between departures.
